A Profile of Dave Saunders

Founder of From Lads to Dads & Specialist in Perinatal and Paternal Mental Health

As the founder of From Lads to Dads, my work is grounded in a deep understanding of the unique mental health challenges facing new and expectant fathers. My goal has always been to ensure men have a safe, understanding space to navigate the profound transition into parenthood.

The Overlooked Reality of Fatherhood's Mental Health

While conversations around maternal mental health are rightly gaining prominence, the impact on fathers is often a silent struggle. The statistics highlight a critical need for focused support:

  • Paternal Postnatal Depression (PND): Studies show that up to 1 in 10 new fathers experience postnatal depression, a number that can rise significantly if their partner is also struggling.

  • Birth Trauma: A significant number of fathers report experiencing symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) after witnessing a difficult or traumatic birth.

  • Anxiety and Stress: The immense pressure to provide, support, and adapt can lead to heightened levels of anxiety and chronic stress that impact the entire family unit.

Recognizing and addressing these challenges is not a sign of weakness; it is a crucial step towards building a healthy, resilient family.

My Specialised Support in Private Practice

While FLTD provides incredible community support, I also offer dedicated, one-to-one therapy for these specific issues in my separate private practice. My work focuses on creating a confidential space to address the core challenges fathers face.

My key areas of focus include:

  • Perinatal & Paternal Mental Health: Navigating the emotional highs and lows of the period before and after birth.

  • Birth Trauma & PTSD: Processing the difficult and often replayed memories of a traumatic birth experience.

  • Anxiety, Stress & Depression in Parenthood: Developing tools to manage overwhelm, anger, and low mood.
